Since CY assumed the Council Chair, staff’s representation had started diminishing. Democratic election and practice were steadily weakening. Does it represent CY’s management philosophy? Or his leadership is so weak that even Way can ignore his authority?

Absolutely! Something has to be done.  We have had enough all these shits.

It’s time to strike back!!!

The top management has reduced all governing bodies to less than rubbers stamps. The Senate, the Management Board and various committees, none of them is in the position to make any decision that matters. Members are often times told at the last minute of some foregone conclusions so that the top management can claim its policy has gone through “extensive” consultation and thus have “wide” support.

Remember their blatant lie about how the 5-year strategic plan had gone through several rounds of consultation? As a matter of fact, the final version bears no resemblence to the earlier draft which had incorporated input from colleagues and gone through certain form of consultation. The current strategic plan of CityU was done in such a rush and hush by the president and his aide, not many people, not even the members of the Senate, had a chance to say or do anything before its publication. In the end, the strategic plan was one year too late and was deemed an “F” by the auditors. 

CityU is governed by whim of the president. Membership of any committee will not change this reality or improve the governance of the university if the president is determined to lead out of insecurity.

It is kindergarten politics.  When the current Senate is composed of 85 ex-officio (mainly Chair Profs and HoDs) and 27 elected members, how can it claim to be a democratic body?  How can they represent staff interests?  And what do they know about staffing and service conditions matters?  Why don’t the management just appoint all members to this staff consultative committee?  Better yet. Why don’t they get rid of this committee altogether?  The management seems to be very selective and would only hear things they want to hear!  Pathetic!

The University Management is in effect replacing two Staff Association executives with two Senate members. Since when the Senate has assumed the responsibilities for staffing and service conditions matters. This is completely out of line. I support the Staff Association in taking actions to stop management from making such a dictatorial move. You call this representation and open elections. What a joke!
